A leadership action plan (LAP) is a leadership development tool to take stock of where you are, where you want to go, and how you plan to get there. Some managers do a leadership action plan every year, revising it as they go along with regard to 3, 5, and 10 year goals. The value of a leadership action plan is to think concretely about how to improve one’s skills, with specific steps outlined for getting from here to there. An LAP also involves developing indicators so that you know if you are making progress or not in improving your skills and preparing yourself for achieving desired goals, being clear about what it will cost, and seeking support and feedback along the way. Although preparing a leadership action plan usually begins with self-assessment exercises, most of you have done self-assessments in other classes, so I am not asking you to do one in this class unless you would like to do so.

Please use the results from the self-assessments that you have already completed if you have them, your own self-reflection, and feedback you may receive from friends, family members, or coworkers regarding your leadership capabilities, to prepare a leadership action plan with regard to your professional career (not to engagement in student clubs). Your leadership action plan should include the following: (1) using whatever self-assessments you have done, your own self-reflection, and feedback from family members, friends, or coworkers provide a brief description of your strengths and weaknesses as a leader, including, how you believe others currently perceive your leadership capabilities, (2) write a personal vision statement of a sentence or two that includes what you want to achieve and the principles or values that you will use to make decisions about your life, (3) define your professional career goals for when you graduate, 3 years after graduation, and 7 years after graduation, (4) choose two or three leadership skills that you believe you will need to develop in order to achieve your professional career goals, (5) outline specific steps you will take to close the gap between your current skill level and the level you need to develop to accomplish your career goals, (6) define milestones you will use to know whether you are improving your leadership skills as you move through your early career, and (7) indicate the social or professional support on which you will rely as you enact your leadership action plan. Please document any sources that you use and be sure to reference others if you use their ideas.
